STMicroelectronics to Exhibit Latest Solutions for Accelerating Smarter Industrial Applications at TECHNO-FRONTIER 2019

STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM), a global semiconductor leader serving customers across the spectrum of electronics applications, will exhibit at TECHNO-FRONTIER 2019 (April 17-19, 2019; Makuhari Messe, Chiba, Japan).

STMicroelectronics to Exhibit Latest Solutions for Accelerating Smarter Industrial Applications at TECHNO-FRONTIER 2019
The ST booth showcases a range of solutions to accelerate smarter industrial applications, including more efficient use of power, more accurate motor control, and proactive maintenance and fault detection for manufacturing equipment.

A lot of manufacturing equipment uses large amounts of power and the need for lower power consumption is growing to an unprecedented level. At the ST booth, the Company will introduce a second-generation wide-bandgap SiC (silicon carbide) 650V / 1200V Power MOSFET.

This product, with body diodes embedded, delivers extremely low switching loss and power loss at high temperatures and contributes to the miniaturization and reduced weight of industrial equipment. In addition, ST will display its 3kW full-bridge LLC resonant DC/DC digital power-supply evaluation board, which provides high-efficiency power by combining ST’s STM32 microcontrollers (MCUs) with the Company’s latest power devices.

Motors play an important role in industrial equipment including industrial robots, machine tools, and drones. At the show, ST will demonstrate a tiny motor driver that integrates an Arm® Cortex®-M0 based STM32 MCU with a 250V / 600V 3-phase gate driver, and various analog peripherals, enabling precise control of a brushless DC motor while achieving a size reduction of approximately 50% compared to conventional discrete solutions.

Another demo shows a motor-control workbench that supports ST’s STM32 microcontrollers and can easily generate vector-control source code by using a GUI.

For industrial IoT that runs industrial equipment in a more intelligent manner, sensing technologies that constantly monitor the equipment’s’ condition, together with suitable communication technologies are essential. At the ST booth, a demo will showcase vibration monitoring to highlight how motor abnormalities can be used for predictive maintenance.

Similarly, another demo will show noise detection of ultrasonic frequencies from gas leaks in high-pressure pipes. Both demos use an industrial IoT development kit equipped with an STM32 microcontroller, an accelerometer, a MEMS microphone, and other components. This development kit is useful for proactive maintenance for manufacturing equipment as it detects slight changes at early stages of failure – before serious damage or expense.

In addition, demos will be shown with a Bluetooth® 5 application processor capable of forming a mesh network with multiple devices within a factory, and with a Sigfox-supported IoT tracker that enables wireless data communication over long distances.

Other solutions on display include a Qi-compliant wireless-charging IC, an NFC Reader IC for a wireless power-supply system, and a USB Power Delivery controller. Furthermore, in order to support prototype development for IoT devices, ST will distribute its STM32 Nucleo development boards as well as X-NUCLEO expansion boards equipped with motion and environmental sensors, RF ICs, motor drivers, and NFC tags at TECHNO-FRONTIER 2019.
