Integration of specialty paper production technologies in industrial automation

Voith and Asia Pulp & Paper (APP) collaborated to deploy an integrated production system, designated as PM 6, to address the increasing demand for low basis weight thermal base paper and machine-glazed (MG) paper grades ranging from 20 to 60 g/m². Manufacturing these specific paper grades requires tight control over surface quality, smoothness, and web runnability at high operational velocities. The project required the integration of automated stock preparation, paper machine processing, and winding systems to achieve an annual production capacity of 120,000 tons.

Integrated system architecture and process logic
Voith supplied the complete digital infrastructure and mechanical processing line, combining its BlueLine stock preparation system with the XcelLine paper machine architecture. The technical responsibilities were divided between Voith’s engineering division for system optimization and APP's local operations team for execution.

The production line utilizes specific technical components to ensure process stability:
  • Stock preparation: An IntensaPulper system is paired with cleaning and refining units to optimize fiber processing and reduce energy consumption.
  • Approach flow and headbox: The approach flow system minimizes entrained air before stock delivery. A MasterJet Pro headbox utilizes dilution water control technology to maintain cross-direction basis weight profiles.
  • Forming and pressing: The forming section combines a Fourdrinier former with a DuoFormer D II to achieve efficient dewatering. It is followed by a Tandem NipcoFlex shoe press designed to increase dryness while preserving paper bulk.
  • Drying and finishing: Web drying is handled by TopDuoRun and CombiDuoRun technologies. Surface properties are adjusted using a SpeedSizer and an EcoCal Soft calender, while final winding is managed by MasterReel and VariFlex NG Winder systems to minimize material losses.
The system features a reel width of 4,970 mm and a process design speed of 1,200 m/min.

Deployment and execution results
The deployment phase was completed two months ahead of the baseline schedule through coordinated engineering validation between the partner teams. The installation was integrated directly into the existing infrastructure of the Jindong Dagang mill.

"The new production line strengthens our supply capability and product quality for thermal paper and high-end MG grades, enabling us to better serve growing market demand," stated Li Yunsheng, CEO of APP Specialty & Graphic Paper.

This implementation builds upon previous infrastructure projects between the two companies established since 1998, which include the deployment of Dagang PM 1, 2, and 3, Guangxi BM 1, Hainan PM 2, and the APP GEP TML 1 lines.
