Alfa Laval Upgrades Boost Efficiency at Shanghai Zhuyuan Sewage Plant

Shanghai’s Zhuyuan Sewage Treatment Plant, the leading facility of its kind in Asia, serves about six million residents in the city, with a capacity of 2.3 million cubic metres per day. Since 2014, this mega-sewage plant has successively invested in 20 Aldec series decanter centrifuges for its Phase 2 and Phase 4 projects, which are responsible for sludge thickening and dewatering.

Customized upgrade services
Sewage treatment plants face the dual challenges of optimizing efficiency and protecting the environment – controlling energy consumption and reducing carbon emissions. So when it comes to meeting the key issue of reducing the moisture content of sludge through technological upgrading and optimization, there is a requirement that this is achieved while improving efficiency, reducing costs, and also laying a good foundation for carbon reduction in its downstream supply chain.

In response to this, Alfa Laval has supplied a customized energy-saving PowerPlates upgrade service for the decanter centrifuges used in the second phase of the Shanghai Zhuyuan Wastewater Treatment Plant project. This further optimizes the plant’s operations, improving the performance of the centrifuges, so that they can achieve more stable sludge output, improved operational efficiency, and less flocculant consumption.

How does the upgrade work?
When the fluid rotates in the same direction as the impeller, the energy-saving vane (liquid level pipe) can capture the kinetic energy of the fluid discharged from the impeller. It then reuses this energy by converting it into reverse thrust for the impeller. The further it is from the centre of the impeller, the more significant the energy-saving effect becomes.

Cost reduction boost
According to the verified data, the energy efficiency of the centrifuge can be improved through the weir plate upgrade, achieving a more stable sludge discharge effect, further increasing the dryness of the sludge and reducing power and chemical consumption. This leads to reduced operational costs and carbon emission cuts for the plant.
