Pertamina Inaugurates Its Largest Rooftop Solar Power Plant

PT Pertamina supports the energy transition through the synergy between PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional (KPI) and PT Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (NRE). These two entities inaugurated the largest rooftop solar power plant (PLTS) within Pertamina Group's operational environment on May 19. The 2.5 megawatt peak (MWp) rooftop PLTS was officially operated in the Workshop area and the New HSSE Building of KPI Balikpapan Refinery on May 19.

The PLTS was installed on the rooftops of three main buildings at the KPI Balikpapan Refinery: the warehouse (1,635 kilowatt peak or kWp), the workshop (744 kWp), and the New HSSE Building (138 kWp). The total installed capacity reaches 2.5 MWp, making it the largest rooftop PLTS installation ever built within Pertamina Refinery operations, and it could reduce emissions by 3,798 tons of CO₂ equivalent per year.

In addition to the KPI Balikpapan Refinery, PLTS systems have also been operated at other refineries, namely Dumai Refinery (3.77 MWp), Plaju Refinery (2.25 MWp), Cilacap Refinery (2.34 MWp), and Balongan Refinery (1.51 MWp). With the rooftop PLTS at the KPI Balikpapan Refinery operation, the total PLTS capacity operated by Pertamina NRE at KPI refinery sites now reaches 12.37 MWp.

This PLTS also employs the latest technology, utilizing artificial intelligence and being based on the Internet of Things (IoT), enabling remote monitoring and control in its operations.

The collaboration between KPI and Pertamina NRE is not limited to PLTS. They are also working together on a flare gas-to-power project. This initiative supports efficiency and emission reduction aligned with net-zero emission (NZE) aspirations by converting waste gas from refinery activities into electricity to power refinery operations.
