Xylem Picked by Koh Brothers for Singapore’s Tuas Water Reclamation Plant

Xylem Inc. (NYSE:XYL), a leading global water technology company, today announces its appointment by Koh Brothers Building & Civil Engineering Pte Ltd, a subsidiary of SGX Catalist-listed sustainable engineering solutions provider, Koh Brothers Eco Engineering Ltd., to supply biological aeration diffuser systems to the upcoming Tuas Water Reclamation Plant in Singapore.

Project enhances Singapore's water sustainability, boosts PUB's capability to reclaim, recycle used water.

Franz Cerwinka, Senior Vice President and President, Xylem Emerging Markets, said, “We’re delighted to be partnering with Koh Brothers and providing our technologies for the Tuas Water Reclamation Plant. Singapore is a world leader in building technologically advanced water systems, and we’re proud of our role in helping Singapore reclaim and recycle water in a sustainable way.”

As part of the project, Xylem will design and supply over 19,000 units of its Sanitaire ceramic disc diffuser systems to the Tuas facility, for treating non-domestic used water that will subsequently be reused by industries.

Choo Siew Meng, Deputy Chairman of Koh Brothers Building & Civil Engineering, said, “We were impressed by the Sanitaire disc diffusers’ track record for high aeration density and deep tank installations. What’s also valuable is the peace of mind that the equipment offers with its durability and reliability. Furthermore, Xylem’s entire team has been proactively engaging us and providing the necessary technical support from the start.”

The Tuas Water Reclamation Plant is part of PUB, Singapore’s National Water Agency’s Deep Tunnel Sewerage System Phase 2 (DTSS2) project, and will be the world's largest industrial used water treatment facility that features ceramic membrane technology when it is completed in 2026. Capable of treating 75,000m3 of used water daily[1], the plant will enhance Singapore's water sustainability by boosting PUB's capability to reclaim and recycle used water.

Given its durability, the ceramic disc diffuser requires minimum effort from users, as it enables easy maintenance and features a long service life, which typically spans 20 or more years. Sanitaire ceramic discs are resilient against chemical damage, rendering them suitable for biological aeration of challenging, non-domestic used water. By providing a continuous supply of oxygen during the treatment process, the diffusers support bacteria growth and activity, which then facilitates the breakdown and removal of organic matter in the water. Sanitaire disc diffusers feature specialized compression molding that deliver high oxygen transfer efficiency at low operating pressures, and promote uniform airflow distribution. Collectively, this contributes to lower system head loss, energy consumption, and operating costs for the facility operator.

[1] There will be two Industrial Liquids Modules (ILM) at Tuas WRP with a combined daily treatment capacity of 150,000m3. The contract for installing ILM2 has yet to be tendered out by PUB.
