The Award is presented each year to an entrepreneur who shows the qualities that reflect the ethos of the Bessemer Society: ambition, perseverance, technical acumen, social purpose, and leadership.

Martin Frost has a strong track record of leading and advising technology businesses across more than two decades. He was the CEO/CFO of science and technology product developer Sagentia from 1997 to 2008, during which time he oversaw the company’s listing on the AIM market.

More recently, he has helped establish several pioneering technology companies in the Cambridge area, including CMR Surgical – the creator of the Versius Surgical Robotic System, which has driven the greater adoption of minimal access surgery around the world.

Lord Alec Broers, the former Vice-Chancellor of Cambridge University, made a virtual presentation of the Lifetime Fellowship Award to Martin Frost during an online meeting of the Bessemer Society. He said: “The UK is a leader in the field of medical instrumentation, and Martin Frost has a long list of accomplishments in this area. He is one of the superstars of the world of high-tech entrepreneurship.”

While based in Cambridge for much of his career, Martin also has strong links with the city of Manchester, having been educated at Manchester Grammar School. He now acts as non-executive chair of Zilico, a medical device manufacturer based in the city.

Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham recognised Martin Frost’s positive impact on the city, adding: “This is a hugely prestigious award from a hugely prestigious society.”

Martin Frost said: “I am delighted to have received the Lifetime Fellowship Award. The Bessemer Society is a wonderfully eclectic mix of people and ideas, and it plays a hugely important role in supporting technology innovation in the UK.”
