Underground ventilation work in progress on the Lyon Metro Line B extension

Eiffage Énergie Systèmes’ expertise brand Clévia specializing in HVAC and energy engineering is to mobilize its underground ventilation experts in order to equip the future tunnel on Lyon Metro Line B with a major smoke extraction system.

Underground ventilation work in progress on the Lyon Metro Line B extension

Like all the region’s public transport, Lyon Metro Line B is administered by the Sytral (authority responsible for transport in the Rhône region and Lyon Urban Area). The line is to be extended to the south west of the urban area, as far as the South Lyon hospitals. As part of this extension project, two new stations and two ventilation shafts are to be equipped by our teams, to ensure smoke extraction in the 2.4 km-tunnel under construction and guarantee traveller safety in the event of a fire.

“The new stations and air shafts are to be given a total of eight fans, each with a diameter of 2.5 m and weighing 5 tonnes. We will be working on the four sites simultaneously, and also inside the tunnel under construction (which will be provided with rails) where we will install ten jet fans, 20 smoke extraction dampers and soundproofing to reduce sound pollution caused by the fans” said Eiffage Énergie Systèmes project manager Loïc Rathat.

The project is scheduled for kick-off during summer 2021, once the preliminary studies have been completed. The ventilation and smoke extraction facilities should be commissioned during the second half of 2022, after a year’s installation work. The underground ventilation team will take charge of commissioning the smoke extraction facility’s monitoring & control and management system while our colleagues from Eiffage Énergie Systèmes Ferroviaires are to programme the system, in order to develop several possible ventilation scenarios depending on the location of the potential fire hazard.
