Laser Distance Sensor with IO-Link for Industrial Automation

With its compact design, high precision, and robust construction, the high-performance optoNCDT ILR3800-100 laser distance sensor has proven itself in demanding measurement tasks. The system is now available in a variant with an IO-Link interface, making the sensor particularly attractive for end-to-end processes in automation technology.

IO-Link Integration and Automated Maintenance
Thanks to the implementation of IO-Link, users benefit from a simple and cost-effective connection technology as well as standardized communication according to the IEC 61131-9 standard. This architecture allows the sensor to be quickly and easily integrated into existing plants, significantly simplifying commissioning. Another decisive advantage becomes apparent during operation: if a sensor needs to be replaced, re-parameterization can be carried out fully automatically. The system transfers the saved settings directly to the new device, which reduces downtime and considerably simplifies maintenance processes.

Firmware Optimization and Measurement Dynamics
Additional performance is provided by a recent firmware update for the entire ILR3800 series. The integrated auto-correction autonomously filters out extreme values and outliers, ensuring continuously stable and precise measurement values. The DYNAMIC preset was developed specifically for dynamic measurements. This default setting reacts particularly quickly to sudden changes in distance and optimizes the sensor settings for an extremely high reaction speed to accurately capture fast movements.

Mechanical Properties and Performance Parameters
The new IO-Link variant continues to offer all the proven advantages of the standard model, including low weight, consistently high signal stability on various surfaces, and a robust design that withstands the demands of industrial environments thanks to its IP67 protection class. The compact and industry-suited housing contains technology that covers a measurement range of up to 100 m in standard operation. By using an additional reflector, this measurement range can even be extended up to 150 m. Data transmission is reliably handled via the IO-Link communication standard. Thus, the sensor combines high precision with state-of-the-art communication capabilities and opens up new possibilities for efficient integration into automated manufacturing and logistics processes.

Additional Context
This section details technical specifications and competitive benchmarking not included in the original product announcement

The market for optical distance sensors with extreme ranges is dominated by systems that use the Time-of-Flight principle for light-travel-time measurement, as conventional laser triangulation is physically inapplicable at these distances. In this segment, the ILR3800 series competes directly with established solutions from manufacturers such as Sick and Baumer. A major competitive advantage of the Micro-Epsilon sensor lies in its combination of an exceptionally high measurement rate and the new DYNAMIC preset, making it ideal for positioning high-rack stackers, bridge cranes, and automated guided vehicles. While many competitors in this performance class rely on expensive, proprietary Industrial Ethernet interfaces, the introduction of IO-Link meets the growing market demand for a cost-effective, fieldbus-independent point-to-point connection that can nevertheless transport complete diagnostic data and parameters up to the cloud level.
