Ophthalmic surgery and clinical eye care increasingly rely on high-resolution visualization systems that integrate seamlessly with digital workflows to support precision and safety. ZEISS has received regulatory clearance in China for two ophthalmic surgical microscopes following approval by the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA).

The approval covers the ARTEVO 750 and ARTEVO 850 microscopes, which are intended for use in both anterior and posterior segment ophthalmic surgeries. The systems combine optical and digital visualization with hardware and software updates designed to support more accurate surgical workflows and improved intraoperative control.

Optical visualization and workflow integration
Both microscopes provide high-quality optical imaging enhanced by digital capabilities, including improved resolution and RGB illumination. Compatibility with the latest generation of ZEISS cataract workflows enables integration with existing surgical processes, supporting consistent data handling and intraoperative guidance.

The ARTEVO 750, which was introduced to the Chinese market at the 2025 China International Import Expo, is positioned for routine and complex ophthalmic procedures such as cataract and vitreoretinal surgery, corneal transplantation, and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery. Its configuration includes enhanced resolution, increased depth of field, intelligent illumination, and intraoperative optical coherence tomography, supporting precise visualization across a range of surgical scenarios.

Clinical feedback cited in the announcement highlights the role of improved optical resolution in supporting delicate ophthalmic procedures, particularly where fine anatomical detail is critical.

Digital and 3D-enabled surgical visualization
The ARTEVO 850 is designed as a digital, 3D-enabled microscope for multiple ophthalmic specialties. It integrates customizable 3D visualization with functional software tools and connectivity within a broader ophthalmic ecosystem. Digital Color Assistant technology enhances color contrast to improve the visibility of anatomical structures, while Smart Depth of Field technology optimizes depth of field by up to 60%¹ to support image clarity during surgery.

A redesigned user interface for the ZEISS CALLISTO eye platform consolidates system controls into a single touchscreen. Digital integration enables reference image matching directly on the 3D display and supports markerless toric intraocular lens implantation with full surgeon control.

According to clinical users referenced in the release, the digital visualization capabilities contribute to clear visibility during procedures while helping reduce operator fatigue.

Availability and industry presentation
With NMPA approval, the two microscopes become available to ophthalmic surgeons in China, supporting the adoption of advanced visualization technologies within clinical practice. The ARTEVO 850 is scheduled to be presented as part of ZEISS’s ophthalmic workflows at the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology conference in Hong Kong, held from February 5 to 8, 2026, at booth 5FG-J01.

¹Smart Depth of Field optimization up to 60% refers to system-based digital depth-of-field enhancement under defined operating conditions.
