Copeland Enhances Sustainable Agriculture Through Mushroom Cultivation Cooling in China

Copeland, a global technology provider of sustainable climate solutions, partnered with Guangdong Fusheng Refrigeration to optimize the Dalishi mushroom cultivation plant in Guangdong province, China. By integrating Copeland’s advanced ZB series medium-temperature scroll compressor technology, this project achieved a 15% improvement in energy efficiency since its installation in 2024, helping to ensure reliable and sustainable operations. The solution supports the development of a sustainable agriculture cold chain in China while contributing to the country’s energy transition efforts.

According to China's policies, adopting clean production technologies and advancing energy and resource efficiency are essential to meet green economic development goals. Additionally, the new guidelines emphasize the importance of developing greenhouse gas reduction technologies and energy-saving processing systems in agriculture. In response, the Dalishi mushroom cultivation plant has implemented technical upgrades and sustainable facility enhancements to optimize its refrigeration system. These improvements focus on boosting energy efficiency to achieve maximum energy savings while maintaining a daily processing output of 20 tons.

In partnership with Copeland, Dalishi deployed the ZB series medium-temperature scroll compressors into its operations. Equipped with Copeland's advanced technology and built-in discharge-temperature protection, these compressors deliver higher efficiency, long-term reliability and operational stability. The large scroll compressor rack solution meets varying cooling capacity requirements while maintaining precise temperature consistency across the life-cycle operation—including mushroom spawn incubation, fruiting chambers, packaging, pre-cooling and fresh and dried product storage processes.

The deployment is further enhanced by Copeland's advanced control system, which can manage up to 15 scroll compressor racks. This system optimizes condensing temperature and suction pressure, balances system operation rates and enhances overall reliability.

Key Benefits Achieved include:
  • Energy efficiency savings: Achieved over 15% energy savings, with a 28% coefficient of performance (COP) improvement during off-peak hours, a 40% reduction in daily energy consumption fluctuations and annual energy savings of 760,000 kWh (calculated based on Guangdong's power grid carbon emission coefficient).
  • Reliable operations: The refrigeration system sustained stable performance even in high summer temperatures exceeding 35°C, with discharge temperatures consistently kept below 85°C to ensure long-term operational reliability. The scroll rack solution ensures minimal downtime with quick compressor replacements.
  • Cost benefits: Compressor cycles dropped from 32 to 9 per day, with oil level fluctuations within ±1mm, cutting maintenance costs by 76% and saving CNY 144,000 annually in labor.
Since installation in 2024, the solutions have earned praise from both end-users and partners for their excellent performance. "The scroll parallel solution operates stably with advanced cooling, making it ideal for large-scale mushroom cultivation," said Lin Xueping, factory director for Dalishi. "It exceeds energy-saving expectations, significantly reducing electricity costs. This success supports expansion and enhances market competitiveness."
